Instructions to Reviewers

General review process

JBB accepts both online submissions and hard-copy submissions. All manuscripts submitted are checked editorially before review. If the manuscript is retained for review, the Editor-in-Chief assigned an editor, who in turn selects ad hoc reviewers to review it.

If the first version of the manuscript is submitted online, the whole review process will proceed through the JBB Online Review System. Reviewers should access the system through the link provided by e-mail. There is no login page available on this website.

Manuscripts submitted in hard copy should be reviewed outside the system. Review reports should be sent directly to the editor in charge.

How to use the JBB Online Review System

Software Requirements

The JBB Online Review System is optimized for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or higher that supports JavaScript. To view PDF files, you need to download and install Adobe Reader. Users are required to have an e-mail address. The system sends e-mails in HTML format. If your mail system does not support HTML, special characters may not be correctly displayed.

Receiving a review invitation

As a reviewer, you will be notified by e-mail of invitation to review a manuscript. You can access the abstract PDF and the reply site through the link in the e-mail.

Click the appropriate response button on the screen to accept or decline the invitation. The editor is notified of your reply. Please send your reply within 3 working days after you receive the e-mail invitation.

If you have any conflict of interest, you should decline the invitation. If possible, please provide contact information of alternate reviewer candidates. You may not transfer the invitation mail to a colleague. If you have a time problem, contact the Editor (outside the JBB Online Review System).

Starting a review

If you accept the invitation, you will shortly receive an automatic e-mail with a link to access the JBB Online Review System. On the Manuscript Review Top page, you find the following options and tools:

You can download the complete manuscript PDF from this link.

Submit Review

Click this link to enter the Review Report page. Review report consists of three different parts:

Recommendation is an online checklist form to evaluate the basic aspects of a manuscript.

Your specific comments to the author should be prepared in MS Word with a .doc extension (.rtf or .docx extensions are not acceptable). Do not include your personal information in the Comments file that will be transmitted to the author.

Your confidential remarks to the editor should be entered in the box so labeled. We recommend that you save the text in your computer because you cannot track them via the JBB Online Review System. After completing your review, click the Submit button. On the next screen you can confirm the PDF version of your recommendation and comments by clicking Track Review Records. If you have any questions about the review process, please contact the editor in charge.

Track Review Records

You can track all versions of the manuscript and your review reports (recommendation and comments) in PDF under Track Review Records during the review process. Once the editor sends his/her final decision to accept or reject the manuscript to the author and the whole review process is completed, you cannot access the review records.

Manuscripts in Progress

You can access the list of manuscripts assigned to you for review by clicking the link in the e-mail invitation or by clicking Manuscripts in Progress under the Manuscript Review Top page.

Receiving an invitation for further review

When a revision is submitted and the editor needs to ask for your opinion, you will be invited again to review the revised version of the manuscript. You can access the Manuscript Review Top through the link in the e-mail invitation. Submit your review as you did for the previous review process.
